Bangladesh Society of Critical Care Medicine (BSCCM) is a non profit, non-political association of Bangladeshi doctors, nurses & other allied healthcare professionals involved in care of the critically ill patients. It was established on December 5, 2009 by a group of renowned Intensivists of Bangladesh led by Prof. Mohammad Omar Faruq, who met at the conference room/library of ICU of BIRDEM General Hospital Shahbag, Dhaka. Its secretariat is located at Department of Critical Care Medicine of same hospital. BSCCM is committed to the promotion & advancement of education, research, & professional development of Critical Care Medicine. The main objective of BSCCM is to unite the Critical Care Medicine Specialists/Intensivists into one body for advancement of scientific knowledge in critical care medicine & to popularize modern critical care in our country.

The founding Intensivists first sat together at the end of 2008 to conduct research as part of an international study on “Management of Severe Sepsis in Asia’s Intensive Care Units” (abbreviated as MOSAICS study) covering 20 Asian countries including Bangladesh. Prof. Mohammad Omar Faruq, the Founding President of BSCCM, was the national coordinator from Bangladesh for that study. With his initiation 17 ICUs from Dhaka city participated in that study conducted in July 2009. Following completion of that study, Prof. Faruq convened a meeting on Dec 5, 2009 inviting leading intensivists of Dhaka city including those who participated in MOSAICS study & proposed formation of BSCCM.
